SAIL to invest Rs.150 crore for steel plant in J&K

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), with five integrated steel plants and three alloy steel plants, is planning to construct a steel-processing unit in Lassipora Industrial Estate in Pulwama district of Jammu & Kashmir. To this plant, it will invest around Rs.150 crore in the plat, which will have a production capacity of 1,00,000 p.a. is expected to be operational by 2010.




As per the Ram Vilas Paswan, Steel Minister, the unit would manufacture finished products such as TMT bars in 8 to 25 mm diameter and galvanized corrugated sheets from input materials sourced from SAIL''s integrated steel plants. The unit will have a TMT bar mill with 40,000 tons p.a. capacity and cut-to-length and corrugation line of 60,000 tons p.a. capacity for GP coils/sheets. Spread across 25 acres of land, the unit will provide employment to nearly 5,000 people, which would constitute major local recruitment.

The steel production increased from 35 million tons p.a. to 59 million tons p.a. and within next three years it is expected to reach 124 million tons.
